Penney and Bob on a Labor Day cruise to Middle Bass Island; the monument in the background, commemorating Commodore Perry's victory over British naval forces (which took place nearby on September 13, 1813), is on nearby South Bass Island. Perry's battle flag bore the legend "Don't Give Up the Ship," (a phrase often, but erroneously, attributed to him) but he did, moving his flag to a sister ship, Niagara after his original flagship, Lawrence, was destroyed in the fight. (It turns out that we're sort-of related to Perry by marriage: his multi-great granddaughter is Tucker Andrews Winter, wife of Nick — Bob's brother, David's, elder son; they are the parents of Maggie and Nate [see December].)

Middle Bass Island is the site of the former Lonz Winery, whose property (shown here) is in the process of being turned into a State Park.
