December, 2008

Two foci this month: The Great Flooring Project (a part of the continuing renovation saga) and the annual trip to Vermont. The two younger boys and Emily all helped with the project and they also joined us in Vermont for a couple of precious days of "family Christmas."

Here's Penney in her study with brush and roller in hand; we told her to just think of it an an opportunity to get a new outfit.

Yes, that's a rolling pin in Penney's hands, and, no, she doesn't think Bob's newly-laid tile is pie crust—she's tamping it down. Because the other rooms were tiled, we had to tile the hallway too before laying the laminate flooring so that the heights would match.

And here's what the hallway looked like after the laminate was installed and the rug replaced. Doesn't it look elegant?!

The laminate has an underlayment with vapor barrier, and the boys became experts at cutting and fitting it. (Andrew to the left; Paul to the right.)

This is the road up the hill to Grandma Morse's place (in the family it's known as "Paul Fall Hill" — don't ask!). Most of what you can see here is her property.

And here's what you see when you get up in the morning and look out the living room window. Yep . . . it's right purty.

If you turn 90° to the right in the picture on the far left, you'll see the road into "town." The maple syrup vendor whose sign you can see is the local plumber.

As usual, there was a lot of downed pine limbs to be freed from the snow, hauled to what eventually became four "burn piles" and cut up with the chain saw.

We also were delighted to have two visits from old friends; former parishioner (Greendale, WI) Haven Andrews and his wife, Paula, stopped by one Sunday from their home in Maine; and Penney reunited with an old girlhood chum, Bonnie McGregor Leet another day (above).

But the best part was having Emily, Andrew and Paul with us. Here's the whole family in one place, gathered around Grandma.

There was also time for knitting, at least for Emily and Penney (seen here toasting the project).

Penney returned to Berea with the kids; Bob stayed an additional ten days in Vermont. Some say it was to avoid tackling the mess in his new study (pictures, below), but the real reason was to get Mom to an audiology appointment in Keene, NH, early in the New Year.

Here's the new computer station; it's about the only part of the study that's in any kind of working order! (The closet [on the left] is holding filing cabinets.)

Here's the "desk" portion of the room. See what we mean?

We saved the best for last!
