January, 2011

If it's January, it's time for the Cleveland Boat Show at the IX Center! And once again this year, Bob was volunteering to help work the Berea Power Squadron booth, where we entice youngsters with a r/c boat pond and try to sell their parents on getting some actual knowledge before going on the water in their boats . Oh, and we usually look over the new sailboats, also! And drool.

Meanwhile, in Minneapolis, granddaughter Caitlin (16, going on 24) launched her new online magazine, Crooked Teeth, to help promote younger artists, photographers and writers in the Twin Cities area. It's garnered an impressive array of plaudits from peers and adults alike; she does a really wonderful job with it.

And, of course, there is the Ohio granddaughter, Adalyn, to keep us enthralled and enchanted!

OK … so the picture of the sailboat is bigger than the picture of the BPS booth!

The Jeanneau 409 (left) is one sweet boat, with just about all the amenities one could desire (yes, we have photos of the interior, but don't want to promote covetousness).

The BPS booth (right) is essentially an information station. We ask passersby to take a simple boating safety quiz and when they miss more questions than they think they did (which happens a lot) we offer them a brochure listing our boating-education courses and a list of sites where the basic course is being offered.

P/C Wayne Spraggins, SN, [that's BPS-speak for a Past Commander who has attained the grade of Senior Navigator, the highest grade in the United States Power Squadrons] is a perennial volunteer at the BPS booth. Wayne teaches Piloting and Advanced Piloting ("piloting" is navigation within sight of land) in "Berea University."

One of my favorite photos grabbed from the Internet!
