August, 2006

August marked the occasion of our first "real cruise" which we took in the company of other members of the Berea Power Squadron.

We spent the first night at Put-In Bay, on South Bass Island, near where Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry whipped the British fleet in the War of 1812. (See September for more info on a family connection with Perry.)

The second night was spent on the north shore of Pelee Island, the largest island in Lake Erie; it's Canadian territory and quite unspoiled.

The third night we arrived at our destination, Leamington, Ontario, with its beautiful marina and interesting historical sites (we visited Fort Malden in nearby Amherstburg, near Windsor, among other places). Leamington also boasts a wonderful National Park which juts out into Lake Erie's north shore.

A rainbow at Leamington, Ontario.
Gary Cline and daughter Kate at her high school graduation party. We've known the family since Kate was about six or so, so it's a real joy to see her "all growed up."
