June, 2007

Lots going on this month, and also lots of pictures!

  • Andrew and Bob had a "mini-cruise" to Kelleys Island before Andrew left for Chicago and the second leg of his Masters' program. Kelleys Island is the largest Lake Erie island in U. S. waters, and has some interesting grooves carved by the Wisconsin Glacier into bedrock. They had a great sail, but it got really windy on the return trip! (Note PFDs in the photos!) Thrills and chills, but no mishaps.
  • Another preaching assignment for Bob at the Peoples' Community Church (see April).
  • A couple of band concerts — a community band with which Andrew plays) with Penney, Emily and Bob cheering loudly even when the piccolos weren't in synch during the "grand finale" (Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever," natch!).
  • A fishing trip for Bob with longtime buddy and former associate Ben Cheesman in the wilds of SW Wisconsin (which looks amazingly like Vermont, whence Penney drove mid-month to await Bob's Amtrak trip to Albany on July 1st).

It takes a heap o' gear for even a "mini"-cruise; we were fortunate to be in the water, though . . . many boats weren't.

The lake was a lot rougher than it looks here — waves were running up to 6' and winds were in the 20~25 kt. range.

Some of you know it was a chance remark about a diocesan meeting being a "waste of good fishing weather" that brought Bob and Ben together 'way back in about 1972.

The fishing trip with Bob (right) and Ben (left) was a lot of fun, but presented some difficulties for Bob, who is very much a novice when it comes to fly-fishing. He had a fine new rod (built for him by Ben), but the streams were very narrow (as you can see in the photos below) and for the most part were surrounded by tall grasses — it's very easy to hang a fly up.

But Southwestern Wisconsin is a lovely place, and we had a grand time just being out in the open air doing something we both love (although Ben did it better, he didn't fare any better in the fish department — we didn't land any!). Notice the reflection of Ben fishing in the photo directly below.

The other "big news" in June is that Paul turned his Nissan Sentra (the "pocket rocket") in for a new Dodge Nitro, which Bob thinks looks like a Hummer on a diet (see below).
