November, 2007

The "wall flag" created by Andrew and his students for the Veterans' Day concert; it is made up of photographs of family members of the students (and director—see far right).

November was a busy month. Andrew's 8th-grade band presented its annual Veterans' Day concert (pictures above) on the 8th.

On the 9th, 10th and 11th we celebrated Penney's birthday in Bayfield, Goderich, and Kincardine, Ontario. We were in Bayfield for a couple of days on our "summer cruise" (see the August page), and liked the area so much we went back for a long weekend; Goderich, about 10 miles north of Bayfield, was on our “destination list” for the cruise, but we never made it on the water, so we decided to get there by land.

Later in the month, we again spent Thanksgiving (our house, this year) with Gary and Maryanne Cline and their delightful children, Katie and Ross; an added bonus was the addition of Ross’ friend, Corey Grau, to the guest list. We had a grand time together but alas! no one thought to take any pictures (at least, I didn’t).

A nearby high school band (resplendent in Santa hats!) joined Bayfield's "Christmas in November" weekend.

The band prepares to kick off the "Santa Parade" in Bayfield. The parade was a small-town special; every group you can think of had a float; it reminded us of the Fourth of July parades at Saxtons River, Vermont (see July, 2006).

Here's the "B&B" where we stayed, in Goderich.

Penney's Birthday weekend coincided with "Remembrance Day" (the Canadian holiday equivalent to our Memorial Day but celebrated on the day of the Armistice which ended World War 1—November 11. Here she is (above) decked out in the traditional poppy to commemorate the day of the Armistice.

Sunset over Lake Huron, at Bayfield.

The beach at Kincardine, about 25 miles north of Goderich and a favorite port with sailors, who like the fact that the “downtown” is right by the harbor.

The second "B" at the "B&B"!

The beach at Goderich; it was warm enough for us to walk the beach (with shoes on, however!).

Andrew’s principal (who agrees with us that he walks on water . . . musically, at least!)  arranged to find some money to install new cabinets in the instrument room adjacent to his band room. To save money, he and Bob installed the panels to finish the job and make the cabinets look "built in." Andrew is shown crawling out from behind one of the cabinets (left photo) and that section of the finished job is shown on the right. It really looks great, and gives the kids a much more “professional” impression of their work.

Andrew really does wonderful work with them, and they respond well to his combination of classroom discipline and “serious” music to learn and play.
