June, 2011

June is end-of-school and back-to-Vermont month for Penney. Bob went with her for part of the summer, and we satisfied a long-held desire to visit the "Bridge of Flowers" in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts (Penney had been there several times, but I had not.). It had been built in 1909 as a trolley bridge over the Deerfield River but was abandoned in 1927 after the automobile bankrupted the trolley company. A year later, a group of ladies started to beautify the bridge with plantings of flowers. The concept has grown since then and it has become a major area attraction.

There are some very interesting rock formations at the falls proper, also. After looking at them for a while, we visited a nearby butterfly conservatory, "Magic Wings." Hundreds of them! Very striking. They all liked Penney!

One of the interesting features of the BoF is the juxtaposition of the beautiful flowers with some very down-at-the-heels industrial buildings!

Sprinkled around the Butterfly House were a number of glasses similar to the one on the left, with a kind of spongelike substance filled with artificial nectar. They sell the kits for these, but we didn't feel the need of them, since we have plenty of flowers in the yard!

"Magic Wings" was a fun trip but I don't know that I'd go back; the butterfly house at Niagara Falls (Canadian side) strikes me as more interesting.
