January, 2008

We again start the year with "Christmas on Epiphany" [January 10 this year, a few days later than in 2007] so that we could share the holiday with Penney's Mom; this year, we did so in Vermont (see December, 2007).

Paul's looking just a little smug . . . could it be the beard?

Emily's looking beautiful (as always!)

Andrew's looking colorless, but that's because the color original was really badly exposed.

Penney's looking very closely, as always!

We don't have a picture of me, but the photo to the right is sort of about me! It was taken in the Nave of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, about two blocks from our house. St. Andrew's was the venue for a class Bob taught in the Baldwin-Wallace College "Institute for Learning in Retirement." Modeled on the "Elderhostel" program, ILR is a high-octane adult-ed program running for an hour and 20 minutes one day a week for six weeks. Bob's topic: "How Did It Come to This: Iraq from Babylon to Bush."

The woman standing is Bob's "coordinator," Betty Wuebold.

Seventy-five people registered for the class and attendance stayed high. I've been asked to repeat it in 2009.

Other January highlights for me:

  • Started the last class I'll need to take for the United States Power Squadrons—Marine Electronics. Once I pass it, and finish two folders of sextant sights for a previous class, I'll become a "Senior Navigator," USPS's highest grade. My term as Chaplain for USPS District 7 will end in March; the District Commander is Doug Sewell, husband of Marion (see February).
  • Another Berea Power Squadron assignment: I worked the Cleveland Boat Show (and developed a serious case of Covetousness walking past "Sailboat Row" to get to the USPS booth!).
  • Had lunch with my old friend retired Bishop Suffragan Arthur Williams, Jr. Arthur followed me as Assistant at St. Mark's, Riverside, RI, many years ago, and was elected Bishop Suffragan of Ohio in 1985.
